Mitsubishi Brings Wireless Charging to Upcoming i

When Mitsubishi launches its first all-electric vehicle later this year, it will be among the first in its class to feature a new method of wireless charging. We here at Hickory Mitsubishi are quite excited for the Mitsubishi i, and we know that it will bring the Japanese automaker into a new realm of green performance. As such, we'd like to take a minute to go over exactly what this new wireless charging method means for EV ownership as a whole.
To develop this new wireless charging method, Mitsubishi has teamed up with WiTricity and IHI Corporations. This new wireless charging method could make long visits to charging stations obsolete, as a vehicle that can charge wirelessly could, in theory, do so from a number of different locations, rather than being tethered to one station at a time.
"WiTricity and IHI are two major players in the wireless charging and electric infrastructure, and it is hoped they can make it easier for drivers, governments and companies to roll out systems to charge cars without plugging in," according to Totally Motor.1
This may seem like something straight out of a science fiction movie, but we assure you, it has actually already been developed on a smaller scale. WiTricity actually produced a system that can use a patented magnetic resonance system to deliver a 3.3kW charge of a distance of two to three inches, safely and efficiently. Of course, there is still some work to be done to perfect it, but the concept is there and it is technologically sound!
All of this from the automaker who brings us incredible models like the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Mitsubishi Lancer, and Mitsubishi Endeavor.
